What type of review is required?

The type of review required for a study is initially determined by the investigator, but ultimately it is the IRB's decision.

The best way to determine the type of review is to get a sense of which review category your research falls into. The checklists located in the Tool kit to the right can help you determine the category.

Once you have determined your type of review, you must submit the appropriate forms related to that review type.  Also See   What Forms are Required?

All research involving human subjects falls into one of the following
review categories:

Exempt Review: *Studies that involve certain kinds of interventions (mostly research involving educational tests or talking to people) and pose no more than  minimal risk to human subjects are usually classified as being exempt from further review. Federal regulations mandate that someone other than the researcher determine whether research is exempt. At IU this is the IRB or Director, IUB Human Subjects Office.

Expedited Review: *Some studies involving no more than minimal risk but involving moderately more invasive interventions qualify for expedited review. Expedited studies are reviewed by the IRB chair or an IRB member designated by the Chair.

Full Board Review: *Any study involving greater than  minimal risk or involving human subjects from certain  vulnerable populations requires full board review -- that is, review by the full IRB, which meets monthly. Protocols must be received by a published deadline , typically 4 weeks before the meeting.
See Deadlines & Meeting Dates for details

Non-research student project *Since class work assignments are usually not intended to or likely to lead to generalizable results, the Human Subjects Committee (HSC) does not normally include these projects under its operational definition of research. However, there are some non-research student projects that do require review by the IRB.
